The
Gospel According to Buzz Lightyear
“Never
give up, never surrender,” the motto of the “Space
Rangers” in the movie Toy Story. A little toy,
Buzz Lightyear still had a lot to learn about “true
surrender.” Let’s follow along and see if we
can learn too!
Can I Trust
God?: We ask this question all the time. Essentially
this was the question that tripped up Eve. By questioning
God’s motives, Satan questioned Eve’s trust.
Buzz refused to trust anyone but himself. This is the state
we frequently fall into. We tend to trust what we know and
we forget that we need to KNOW God. The more we know Him,
the more we stand to trust Him. So if your trust is low
in God, try getting to know Him better.
Admitting
Our Limitations: “I CAN FLY!” Buzz insisted
on it. He would never admit he was “just a toy.”
Woody and the other toys were able to enjoy the love of
Andy (the boy who was their owner and master) and so were
happy. Just like us, we refuse to admit we are creatures
who need Christ. He is our owner and master and when we
admit this, His love overflows us.

What It Means
To Surrender: First of it doesn’t mean to give
up on everything, to become lazy or to be blind… well
puppets. We can still be “Space Rangers,” but
we fight the good Fight of faith instead of our own battles.
When we follow our General in obedience we find a purpose.
A surrendered person doesn’t insist on his way nor
does he push others out of the way (like Buzz did to woody).
Instead he follows God’s way. This surrender isn’t
easy it is hard work, but worth it.
The Blessings
Of Surrender: Buzz almost didn’t make it, but
finally he surrendered. He found his true purpose to be
among his friends and contribute in what ways he was best
able. When he did this, he was even able to learn how to
FLY. He fully surrendered to being a toy and finally he
found JOY! Once we fully surrender to our Lord Jesus, we
also will find our victories and have our peace and Joy!
The Best Way
To Live: Surrender is not the best way to live,
it is the only way to live. Once we, like Buzz Lightyear,
realize this we can join our brothers and sisters, our fellow
toys, and serve God to our best abilities. Finally, let
us remember that surrender is not a one-time event. It has
to be done over and over again. Our flesh, the world and
Satan all conspire to make us rise up against God. So we
must daily remember to surrender again to God, our Lord.
Of course that is true (even in the movies), that’s
why they made Toy Story II.
